In a word - "Holidays".

Christmas, New Years,
the week of President's Day, MLK Day, Spring Break. These holidays are when the ski resorts are most crowded. It's also usually the most expensive time to go skiing.

Ski resorts can also get very busy when they host a special event. Some examples are, Aspen has the X Games the last week of January. Whistler has the World Ski & Snowboard Festival in April. Park City has the Sundance Film Festival in mid January.

If you are looking to avoid the crowds on your next ski vacation look to time your ski vacation between major holidays. Don't forget to check and see if there are any special events scheduled.
