When do prices drop?
When do the prices go up?

This is a great question, and one that can be difficult to answer and predict. Similar to most other commodities that are limited in supply the prices will increase and decrease based on demand.

The main factor for determining this demand are the dates of travel. Simply put, if you want to travel at the same time as most other travelers, you should expect to pay a premium for these dates (Christmas through New Year's weekends, Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend, President's Weekend and Spring Break weeks). If you are fortunate enough to have a flexible schedule you can take advantage of lower periods of demand and get some aggressive pricing to fill in vacancies.

Very rarely do prices drop in the ski industry. The exceptions can be during the weeks between MLK Jr. Weekend and before President's Weekend, or worst case scenario, if there are poor snow conditions. Prices for lodging can also drop if you are willing to wait until 7 days prior to arrival to get a "last minute deal" Be cautious however because lodging may be unavailable, especially if you have specific needs. Also, if you wait too long, and many components of the vacation can increase in price by booking last minute such as airfare and ground transportation which may offset any cost savings.

Prices will increase without notice in the ski industry based on many factors including a limited supply of lodging inventory, events and festivals, and high demand due to great snow conditions. When a resort gets a lot of early season snow it can affect the demand for lodging for the rest of the season. Many properties "yield" their rates if you book directly meaning you can pay a higher rate if they only have a few rooms remaining. Working with a company like Rocky Mountain Getaways can payoff greatly because we have contracted rates in which the properties must honor regardless of the amount of remaining inventory.

The best way to get the lowest price and best selection of properties and rooms to choose from is to book your vacation early. If you can book your trip before it starts snowing you can take advantage of significant discounts while choosing from the best available options. There are great promotions available if you are able to place a deposit before the end of September or October in many cases. Working with a knowledgeable and savvy professional such as myself is the best way to get a quick analysis of the rental market conditions to determine the best time to book your ski vacation. The relationships I have developed with the properties in which we partner with go a long way toward making sure I have the most current information and the best pulse on what can be a very volatile and unpredictable ski travel market.

The Early Bird catches the worm here. The very best booking deals are available as early as May for the upcoming US/Canadian season. You can get up to 40% off to book in early summer. For South America trips you can get approximately 30% off to book from January to March for their summer ski season.

Early is the best time to book a deal. Resorts offer discounts to those who book as early as September or October event into early November. Though risky adventure seekers may be able to find a last minute deal late in the season, early is always best. When booking early a traveler will be able to take full advantage of deep discounts with maximum available accommodation.

Book by the end of November to have the best chance of getting a great deal on the resort and lodging you want. Sure, you might be able to get a better deal later in the season but your chances are a lot slimmer the longer you wait.

Booking early will get you a great price, sure. But you will also be able to insure your first choice of lodging and flights. This can be very important for the busy holiday season in December and as well as President's Day and Spring Break.

I examined 750 ski vacation deals to ski resorts in the United States and Canada from the 2010/11 season. The deals were offered by tour operators and wholesalers that specialize in packaging ski and snowboard vacations.

Over 57.2% of all the the discounted deals I looked at had to be booked before Dec 31 and 42.8% after Dec 31. So there are still some good deals to be had after the first of the year but most of them are for travel in late March and April. You can see the details here.

Bottom line. Book by the end of November if you can, but definitely by the end of the year.
