On October 19, 1938, the Forest Service issued the initial permit to construct a lift at Alta to the Salt Lake Winter Sports Association. Alta officially opened as a ski area that December. Altašs director of skiing, Alan Engen, recalls, "After resolving mechanical issues, Alta was able to operate the Collins lift on January 15, 1939. 350 skiers rode that day, paying twenty-five cents a ride, or $1.50 for a full day of skiing." Alta was born through the cooperative efforts of the Salt Lake Winter Sports Association (now the Alta Ski Lifts Company), the Utah State Road Commission, Salt Lake County, the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce and the Forest Service. The Winter Sports Association purchased an aerial tramway from the Michigan-Utah Mines, which had carried ore from Alta to a location in the canyon called Tanners Flat in the early 1900s. The Winter Sports Association raised $10,000 to pay for the tram and subsequent construction of the second lift in America. More Alta News Here. |
