Snowmass Lodging and Accommodations
Written by Greg and Heather Burke
Staying at Snowmass, on the mountain versus in town in Aspen, you have several slopeside lodges in Snowmass Village, including Stonebridge Inn and a Westin - formerly the Silver Tree. We recommend the swank Viceroy Snowmass, which is grand and gorgeous inside. Built in 2009, everything is posh and polished from the elegant lobby to the beautiful Eight K Dining Room. We loved relaxing in the luxurious lounge tucked in between the lobby and restaurant on beautiful couches by sleek warm gas fireplaces.
Our luxury suite in the Viceroy Hotel was outfitted for skiers with plenty of closet space, WiFi, smart phone docks, robes for our trips to the outdoor pool and hot tubs, a big beautiful granite and tile bath, and a gas fireplace by the master bed. Best of all was the view of the slopes, the pool and the mountain from our upper floor. The service at Viceroy is on the very upper end, the ski valet takes your skis and poles as you ski in at the end of the day, and stores them for you. There are rare boot dryers too, just steps from the slopes.
You’re a short walk or complimentary shuttle from Viceroy to Snowmass Village for après ski at Venga Venga or Ricards. Or head to the spa and the fantastic outdoor pool with hot tubs and toasty flaming fire pits – all this plus a slope view. Evenings at the Viceroy, you can dine in the beautiful glass window dining room Eight K with dispersed modern fireplaces throughout. Enjoy an epicurean treat, the chef is Cajun, with a view of the open concept kitchen. Or grab a high top or a seat at the beautiful blue glass bar in the lounge for lighter fare including delicious western burgers and traditional Gumbo. You can also walk, or ride in the hotel winterized electric golf cart - called the Luge - to Snowmass Village restaurants Ricards, and Venga Venga, or head to downtown Aspen 17- miles away.
If you have kids, Viceroy caters to them beyond just the heated outdoor pool, they are VIK = very important kids- which special activities, Kids Après Party and Kids Night Out, a children’s menus at Nest and Eight K, cookies in the lobby afternoons, and a fun family and pet friendly atmosphere.
In the morning your skis will be waiting by the slopes on Assay Hill, Viceroy has its own chairlift to transport you to Snowmass Village. If you like being first, sign up for Aspen Snowmass First Tracks at Viceroy’s concierge, it's complimentary and very special. First Tracks has you loading the Village Express at 8:15 am with a select group and a ski guide before the mountain opens officially. Our guide took us straight to Big Burn, where we scored gorgeous powder, 5 inches, followed by another untracked run on Sheer Bliss, all with the beautiful views of the Maroon Bells in the morning light before the public arrived at the ski lifts.
During your Snowmass ski vacation, take a day to ski Aspen Mountain (aka Ajax) just 7-miles away and Aspen Highlands another 3, all part of the same Aspen lift ticket, there’s a shuttle system. Also extend your stay and lodge in downtown Aspen for more lively après ski, very chic boutique shopping and a more authentic ski town vibe. In fact, the locals don't ski Snowmass, they prefer Ajax...their loss. Out play the Aspenites and ski them all.
