Bretton Woods, New Hampshire
NH’s largest ski resort, Bretton Woods, is a luxurious ski vacation spot. The views are extraordinary, so is the grooming on 102 trails served by 4 high-speed quads, 10 lifts total, plus there is recently added glades and side country skiing on Mt Stickney for a mild challenge. Bretton Woods is popular with those looking for mostly well-manicured cruising, pleasant birch tree lined skiing and exceptional views of 6,288' Mount Washington - the largest mountain on the Eastern Seaboard.
Bretton Woods opened in 1972 and for years was known as Medicare Mountain for its ego pleaser ski terrain. In recent years, a few steeper runs have been added like Bode's - named for Bode Miller, along with some earthier glades in on West Mountain, Rosebrook Canyon, and Mt Stickney. Now there is a nice mix of groomed boulevards and more advanced trails, all serviced with modern lifts - with the exception of the Telegraph T-Bar that accesses the Mt Stickney side country glades added in 2012. For families, Bretton Woods is famous for their exceptional learning programs for kids and nursery conveniently located at the base. There is even an indoor and outdoor Climbing Wall at the base lodge and a Canopy Tour Zip Line if you wish to Zip and Ski.
Be sure to ski to lunch at Bretton Woods' mountain top restaurant - Latitude 44, at the top of the Bethlehem Quad - for delicious burgers, bread bowls of soup, and super views - plus a full bar! Bring your camera.
The Resort of Bretton Woods also offers NH’s best Nordic facilities, and elegant lodging at the century-old Hotel Mount Washington with a stunning Presidential Spa, now owned by Omni Hotels.
Staying at the 1902 Hotel Mount Washington makes for a perfect ski vacation in the White Mountains. The Grand Hall is beautifully decorated with original chandeliers and Tiffany glass, as are common rooms like the mountain view Conservatory and the pretty Princess Lounge. Have an après ski drink in The Rosebrook Lounge, watching the alpenglow over Mount Washington, or head for the Spa or the huge outdoor heated pool. The Hotel even features a Jeweled Terrace rooftop year round synthetic ice rink. The Presidential Spa has every treatment imaginable in a very posh setting. There is so much to see and do, you might want to stay for a week, to enjoy wine and whiskey tasting, the historic hotel tour, dog sledding, horse drawn sleigh rides, and dancing in the prohibition-era Cave.
Bretton Woods opened 1973, becoming largest NH ski resort in 1999 - the same year as the 1902 Mount Washington Hotel opened for its first winter season.
