Rusutsu is an amazing alternative to Niseko United that's only approx. 30 min away. The snow is awesome! It's light and dry, and 98% of the locals don't touch it as they're crazy for the groomers, which means fresh snow remains untracked longer here. Go to Rusutsu and go anywhere, as the entire resort funnels back to a single base. They actually rope off the runs so any terrain that isn't a run is out of bounds, so most everything you'd want to shred is not maintained or patrolled so you must watch out for cliffs and creeks. More authentic than Niskeo but smaller with a little less English spoken however still enough to get by.

Best resort in Japan. All the snow of Niseko and none of the crowds. Fresh lines all day! Plus there's an abandoned theme park, what more could you want? I've ridden all over Japan and Rusutsu is the best.... More

Rusutsu is a little smaller than the nearby Niseko area, but offers very good value for the price. The snow amount is comparable to Niseko and it is much less crowded. The West mount offers a very family friendly area with several gentle slopes, while the east mount and Mt. Isola have several very challenging runs to offer. I can definitely... More

We were staying in Niseko and wanted to explore the surrounds and Rusutsu was recommended. We liked it so much, we went back a second day. An extremely family friendly resort with kids rides in hotel foyer and definitely geared towards the family ski holiday. But more than ample terrain for me a 20+ yr skier and my colleague a boarder. Excellent... More

Easily accessible with a short bus ride from Kutchan. Stops right outside the main Hotel with quick access to the lifts and probably the best champagne powder you will ever experience in the world. It will be very difficult to stop grinning after the day in an osen with a nice cool Sapporo beer to end the day.... More

Rusutsu is a really good resort for backcountry and powder skiing, especially because it gets the same amount of snow as niseko, just not the crowds because it's less known than Niseko.... More

Rusutsu is a hidden gem. It's becoming more and more popular, but there is still plenty of terrain to accommodate crowds. The terrain varies from mellow gladed runs to steep open trails, groomed and ungroomed, with excellent side-country and backcountry access. The town is somewhat underdeveloped aside from the one massive sky-scrapper hotel at the... More

Rusutsu is HUGE!!! (by Japanese standards) You can really let loose and experience a multitude of terrains at various levels. The park is magnificent in scale and never feels crowded. Getting around the resort can be confusing at times, but if you are spending more than a day there you won't be disappointed at getting lost. There are a lot of... More

Rusutsu is everything you would expect in Japan, a powder room, tree skiing, volcano backdrops, cultures, excellent food and a quirky Japanese disney themed hotel. Go to get back there.... More
